Les manipulations vertébrales semblent avoir été employées de tout temps, en
Egypte ancienne, en Asie, puis en Europe.
Spinal manipulations seem to have been used for long, first in ancient Egypt and
in Asia, then in Europe.
Ambroise
Paré, 1585. Traction de la jambe droite d'un côté et du tronc de
l'autre. Le praticien applique une pression à deux mains sur
l'articulation sacro-iliaque. Il s'agit bien d'une manipulation sous
traction, technique qui ressemble beaucoup à celle utilisées par J.
Cyriax, un médecin anglais, dans les années cinquante et soixante.
Ambroise
Paré, 1585. Traction of the right leg on one side and of the trunk
on the other. The operator applies a pressure with his two hands on
the sacroiliac joint. This is actually a manipulation under
traction, a technique very similar to the ones used by J. Cyriax, a
British MD, in the '50s and '60s.

Les
manipulations de la colonne vertébrale ont été beaucoup utilisées par
les rebouteux. Les manoeuvres étaient simples et assez brutales.
L'examen clinique était sommaire. Le diagnostic de "vertèbre déplacée"
était la règle.
Spinal
manipulations were much used by bonesetters. The manoeuvres were basic
and rather violent. The clinical exam was simplistic. The diagnosis of
slipped vertebra was customary.

Bonesetters
might have various jobs. Here, a sport teacher who, beside boxing,
claims practising "spinal manipulations" and managing "deformities and
scoliosis". A motto caps it all: "I spend all my moments to run towards
